The first jailbreak application for the iPhone 3GS has been released by premier iPhone hacker George Hotz. Yes by the same guy who you may remember unlocked the first iPhone too.

The software is named “purplera1n,” and it is availabe for windows only, not Mac, and not Windows 7. Hotz says a jailbreak for Mac is “coming shortly.” Hotz’s application requires an iPhone 3GS running the 3.0 OS, and the latest version of iTunes — 8.2. Once the hack is applied, your 3GS will become unlocked, but you will still be tied to your carrier.

The unlocking tool is in beta version so please make sure that you have backed up all your important data before attempting this jailbreak. Hotz has released his purplera1n solution because the iPhone Dev Team have decided to wait. In his blog post Hotz says:

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes.
Anways, jailbreak software can be downloaded from here, try it and don't be ashamed about posting comments,

Download PwnageTool_3.0.dmg Now

The iPhone Dev Team has done it again - iPhone OS 3.0 is jailbroken and, using PwnageTool on a Mac, first generation iPhone users can do a clean jailbreak. The same thing cannot be said about iPhone 3G users relying on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, the Dev Team stresses. There are still some bugs to be cleaned. 'PwnageTool_3.0.dmg' is now available from the team's blog.

I think you would have noticed that sometimes when you are listening to music in your iPhone's iPod and at the same time trying to run some Apps or Games and your application or game got stopped working(in nerd's slang "crashed"). This has happened to me many times and i used to end up with restarting my iPhone, because as an iPhone user we are not given any guides or tools to know the reason why the Apps don't work always and generally we blame the App developers.

Here is the reason why these Apps crash up and how you can avoid 'em.

Whenever you run an App on your iPhone and close it, it is not really closed and it keep running in the background, and use your iPhone's memory resources. The iPhone comes with a 128Mb of total Runtime memory and don,t connect this with the storage memory which the handsets come in, normally amounting to 8Gb , 16Gb or 32Gb. Now all the applications and the Operating System has to process in the total 128Mb available which means that you can't run multiple applications at the same time because of limited memory resources.
Few built-in applications like the the iPod player, Phone application, Mail application and the Safari web browser etc. continiously run in the background even when closed and this is the main reason the iPhone users suffer from crashing applications. Now the only solution for this till date was restarting the handset in order to close all the processes running in the background, but i have got a better solution which is available in the form of a App.

Free Memory iPhone App – The Operating System does not allow Free Memory to kill any app directly. When Free Memory(app) frees up memory, the OS releases the memory Free Memory(app) requests. If it can't release the memory, apps are closed to free up the memory. In some instances, Mail or iPod remain running because they do not consume loads of memory. The App costs you 0.99$ and is not a free app, but i am very much happy after buying this application since i don't have to restart my iPhone again and again and waste another 5 minutes. Whenever i feel my iPhone is running slow. I just simply tap on the Free Memory App and click on Free Memory and done, and my iPhone run quicker without any crashes.
Some other advantages of using this App are that once you free up some of your iPhones memory the background running process are cleaned up and this inturn would save up your iPhones battery which means you can improve iPhone battery life and you can also check out the battery level in the same App.

As the title of the review says, this is a new browser that is geared towards iPhone and iPod users. Its main asset is that it boasts a tab system with favicons which are always accessible from the main page, and that can be switched with one tap. In practice, this system will let you open new links and see search results without needing to stray away from the page that you are currently viewing. Speaking of search capabilities, Nightglow comes with built-in support for Google, YouTube and Wikipedia.

Further functionalites include a bright corrector and a tool named “Screen Grabber” to scroll through the webpage without the need to close the keyboard. Furthermore, access authentication is supported and you can navigate sites that require authentication in a direct way.

When all is said and done, if you feel your current iPhone or iPod browser still has some way to go and you want to explore other pathways this new solution might just be what you want. You can procure it at the App Store for an introductory price and arrive at your own conclusions.

While King Kayani has a tutorial on how to setup Resco Explorer, I strongly feel Total Commander is a much better choice. Resco is a little bit more “noob-friendly” [probably why Jeremy likes it] — It defaults to hide file extensions. (shows shellres.192.dll without .dll)
I also was very disgruntled because EVERY time I opened Resco on my Sprint Diamond, it would default to “Large Icons,” even though every time I close the program I have it changed to “small icons” in settings.

And last, but definately not least: TOTAL COMMANDER IS FREE!!!

Download Total Commander HERE.

Nokia Map Loader is a software program for the Windows and Macintosh operating system that has been designed by Nokia. The application can download maps for the Nokia Maps service directly to the cell phone. This could for example be used to download maps of cities or regions before traveling there. The other available option would be to download the maps directly to the cell phone without preloading them on a computer system first. The first option is obviously the less expensive and faster one as downloads directly to the cell phone are usually quite expensive and slower.

Nokia Map Loader can be used to download selected maps directly to the cell phone using a computer’s Internet connection. The maps come in different sizes ranging from a few Megabytes to 20 and more Megabytes. The size of all maps offered exceeds 3 Gigabytes which would cost a fortune when downloaded over the air directly.

Some user had problems using the Nokia Map Loader application. They did experienced interrupted downloads and criticized that they could not delete single maps once they were downloaded to the cell phone. That’s where the direct download links to all Nokia Maps come in handy. The download links point directly to the files on the Nokia servers and can be downloaded with download managers or directly in the web browser. The page does contain instructions on how to add these maps to the Nokia cell phone as well.

Do you have plenty of friends watching you phone all the times? Or even you don’t but you want some added privacy for your text messages and don’t want anyone to touch your text messages, either incoming or outgoing? Okay here is the solution for you (if you are a Symbian Mobile phone user), download this simple application called “Active SMS Lock”

The latest of the nokia phones in the E series have an inbuit data encryption feature that can protect your files you want but the N series users and the other nokia phone users do not have this privilege. Now, not anymore, with Active SMS Lock installed in your phone you can also have the same feature but applicable only to the messages and not any other files.
You can either password protect your inbox and outbox or you can also hide the messages. This hiding thing is useful when

you have saved the messages in some other folder which you are not going to access frequently.

It’s official: the iPhone is becoming the battle ground for the slickest Twitter applications around, which means nothing but good things for the iPhone user numbers.

Not too long along, we saw Tweetstack walk into the ring and bring your TweetDeck columns to your phone. Now iPhone and desktop veteran, Twitterrific, from Iconfactory, has bulked up and shipped out “Twitterrific 2.0″. And, from the looks of it, this one will not disappoint.

So what’s new in Twitterrific 2.0 that we should care about? Among them: Multiple account support, filters for mentions, DMs, favorites, and marks (which are like personal favorites), trends, search by keyword, person, or location, saved searches, notes on users, retweet, conversations, custom shortcuts, the ability to follow/unfollow/block, expanded and condensed views, shrinkable text, and complete Twitter bios. That’s a big change list indeed.

The app has been submitted to the iTunes App Store and is expected to be approved next week, much to the delight of Twitter/iPhone users everywhere, no doubt.

Mozilla is inching closer to the release of Firefox 3.5, which includes a faster Javascript engine, a private browsing mode, faster page rendering, and changes to the way tabs are handled. Firefox 3.5 beta 4 is due to be released within the next week or so.

If you're not ready to test out pre-release software yet, Mozilla should be releasing Firefox 3.0.9 next week as well. That version will likely offer bug fixes and security updates but no major new features.

Or if you want to live on the bleeding edge, you can always try the early builds of Firefox 3.6, also referred to as Firefox.Next. Goals for that version include faster startup times, improved add-on and customization support, and blurring the distinction between desktop and web apps. You can download the latest nightly builds of Firefox.Next from Mozilla's FTP site.

What’s New in Firefox 3.5 Beta 4

Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 10 months. Firefox 3.5 offers many changes over the previous version, supporting new web technologies, improving performance and ease of use, and adding new features for users:

  • This beta is now available in 70 languages - get your local version.
  • Improved tools for controlling your private data, including a Private Browsing Mode.
  • Better performance and stability with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine.
  • The ability to provide Location Aware Browsing using web standards for geolocation.
  • Support for native JSON, and web worker threads.
  • Improvements to the Gecko layout engine, including speculative parsing for faster content rendering.
  • Support for new web technologies such as: HTML5

Accessing the internet and browsing pages has become much of trend and a need too. Several web browsers especially built to be used on mobile phones are already available; the new enterant in this series is BOLT, BOLT is a free downloadable browser that offers an uncompromised browsing experience on even lower-end mobile phones.Rather than offering a simplified, mini version of the Internet, BOLT provides users with a fast, efficient, feature-rich way to enjoy full PC-style web pages and rich media applications on all levels of mobile devices.Built on Bitstream's ThunderHawk browsing technology, BOLT is the result of 5+ years experience developing mobile browsers that optimize usability, speed and performance on resource-constrained systems with limited memory, processing power and screen space.

    BOLT also claims -

    • Full PC-style browsing for all types of supported mobile phones.
    • Loads pages faster than any other mobile phone browser.
    • The battery consumption is lesser by 1/3 as compared to other mobile phone browsers.
    • To support streaming videos, RSS feeds, social media sites, Google Maps, etc.
    • To support viewing Web sites in all Latin-based languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish, Swedish, and many others that are fundamentally Latin-based.
    • You can install it along with the already existing browser on your mobile phone.

Talking about the security concern, BOLT claims -

    Security features in BOLT include:

128-bit secure (SSL) Connection: BOLT uses an encrypted protocol called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to access secure Web pages.

Filtering: Server filter protects you from spyware, malicious or faulty add-ons, online fraud and spoof Web sites. The BOLT server acts as a filter that protects you against common threats, such as spyware or other types of malware, when browsing the Web.

Certificate error notification: A certificate is an electronic document that can help identify a Web site’s owner and can help you make decisions about trusting the site with personal or financial information. BOLT warns about certificate error when there is a problem with a certificate or the server’s use of the certificate.

Pop-up Blocker: A mechanism that provides you with a choice to view or block pop-up windows.

BOLT is now available for download, click here to download BOLTBROWSER.

Android phones will now have at least one edge over Apple’s iPhone: They’ll be able to make Skype calls. Announced today by Skype COO Scott Durchslag at the Consumer Electronics Show, the new Lite version of Skype will offer voice calling to other mobile or desktop versions of Skype, but doesn’t yet offer video calling. The Lite version of the popular VOIP (voice over IP) software also works on more than 100 Java-enabled phones from five handset manufacturers—LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. “Making the Skype experience available for download to Android-powered devices, as well as hundreds of other mobile phones from the world’s leading handset manufacturers is a major step forward for Skype,” said Scott Durchslag, COO of Skype.

“Nearly half the world’s population are mobile phone users today and we know that many people who already use Skype want the option to use Skype on their mobile phones. We are committed to working towards our goal of getting Skype into the pockets of the mobile masses.” Also today at CES, the eBay-owned company announced that the next version of its extremely popular Windows version, Skype 4.0 would launch in early February. The update to this software, which is used by over 370 million people worldwide, has been in beta since last spring. A third announcement made today at CES was the availability of Skype 1.0 Beta for Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). The company worked with Intel to develop a new mobile version of Skype for MIDs based on the Intel Atom processor and Moblin-based Linux OS.
