Here's something you won't hear everyday, I deactivated my Facebook account last night. While that's news on its own, there's more. I didn't do it because I'm dissatisfied with Facebook and it isn't a permanent thing, rather perhaps I did it because I'm too satisfied with Facebook. I simply found myself spending too much time on Facebook when I should have been writing, or working on my startup, so I went into my Facebook account settings to disable the account. Here's what happened next.
The first interesting thing that happened was Facebook asking me why I made this decision. Other websites do this, but Facebook used a very Web 2.0, AJAX-y form to try and convince me against my decision. For example, if you checked the box saying "Too many people bother me", a little box appeared below it saying "Did you know Facebook has privacy features to stop this from happening?" I think that's very shrewd and worthwhile for Facebook to do. While the system helps Facebook find out why people are leaving (something most sites do), the system goes one step further to try and prevent people from leaving.
Furthermore - and this was a little troubling/annoying - once I deactivated my account, Facebook told me I could simply log in when I was ready to re-activate and when I tried to re-activate, they would e-mail me with instructions on how to do that. But just a few hours later I received this e-mail from Facebook without actually trying to re-activate:
Despite what this says, I had not tried to log into my deactivated account. This message, by all accounts, should not have been sent to me until and unless I did try to log in. Either this was a mistake, or Facebook does this to everyone who deactivates hoping the person will see this and decide to reactivate even if they were not ready to. The second part is a little pushy on Facebook's part and the whole strategy in general reminds me of how cell phone companies try to retain your service if you try to cancel by phone.Hey Jay,

Microsoft has acquired Seattle based social networking site WebFives.
WebFives was initially founded in 2004 by former Microsoft engineer Mike Toutonghi as Vizrea and offers social networking with a focus of mobile media, including video, music and photos. Users are provided with standard social networking profile pages complete with blogging, and have the option of accessing their sites via computer or via a WAP specific page.
According to The Seattle Times, Toutonghi told WebFives users that the service will stop at the end of the year because of the Microsoft acquisition, making the acquisition a technology buy as opposed to a community buy. Toutonghi went on to encourage users to sign up to MSN Spaces and/or Windows Live for their social networking experience.
Price of the acquisition was not disclosed.

oToday's cool lesson is "Drag and Drop". I learned the other day that it is not neccessary to arrange your windows side by side to accomplish this. Nor do you have to Cut and Paste. By first highlighting the text, and then dragging it over the other program in the Taskbar, said program will automatically jump to the front. This is cool.
PRINT SCREEN: Hold down the control key and look in the upper right side above your letter keys for "Print Screen SysRq" or "Prnt Scrn" or something to that effect and hit it. Next, open a new file in "Paint" (Probably Start/Programs/Accessories/Paint). Next under Edit, select Paste. Next, under File, select "save as" give it a name, and be to sure choose JPEG where it says Save as Type. You can now make screenshots of whatever you wish. This is cool.

Print Screen...I use that every week to make a summary page of about 20 to 25 different screens, for easy viewing of others I email it to...
A couple of handy hints...
You don't need to paste it into Paint, you can paste it into any program, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
The summary page I produce are all excel spreadsheets, and I realized I could make it more legible if I created a macro that would crop the off the bottom, top and sides of the print screen, getting rid of all the tool bars, scroll bars, etc., I included in the macro enlarging what was left of the print screen so it's as big as possible.
To make the macro easier to access, I pasted a clip art of whatever at the top of the summary page, right clicked the picture and assigned it the macro. (then, I freeze framed the sheet so the clip are can always be seen at the top.
That way, I can just print screen all 20 or so of the sheets, then, clicking on the pasted print screen, just click on the clip are and it runs the marcro, formating the print screen.
It's a super duper time saver.

Progress is measured in steps both big and small. The smaller ones may get less attention, but they are much easier to take.
It's been a year of big steps for Apple. The company dropped the "Computer" from its name in January as a way of showing Apple was no longer just about the Mac, and the clear priority for 2007 in Cupertino was to get the iPhone out the door and selling briskly. Then, perhaps for kicks, it decided to overhaul its entire lineup of iPods.
Later today, Apple will take a smaller step, with the launch of Mac OS X 10.5, code-named Leopard. Leopard's coming on scene later than expected, almost 30 months after Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) launched in April 2005, in part due to the push to get the iPhone out in time. CNET'S review is in, and my colleagues Elsa Wenzel and Robert Vamosi are positive.
There are dozens of important new features in Leopard, perhaps most notably the Time Machine application that could make it easier for users to back up and restore their files. Backing up your files is generally a simple exercise with a external hard drive, but Time Machine is interesting because of the friendly way in which it lets you restore files, flying back in time (and space) to the last instance in which that file was saved.
But all the reviewers, including Apple favorites Walt Mossberg at The Wall Street Journal and David Pogue at The New York Times, felt compelled to point out that Leopard is very much an evolution of previous versions of Mac OS X, and not a dramatic breakthrough like some past releases. It's certainly nothing like the tectonic shift Microsoft users went through in the switch from Windows XP to Vista, or Windows 98 to XP.
That can come off as a negative assessment. But it's not.
Computing trends change so quickly now: are you doing the same things with your Mac today that you were when Tiger was released in 2005? Maybe, but you're definitely capable of doing much more today, and even more so compared with when the first version of Mac OS X arrived in 2001. With Leopard, Apple will have made five major upgrades to the original Mac OS X operating system in six years.
Guess what other operating system made its debut in 2001. After the launch of Windows XP that year, it took Microsoft a well-documented eternity to release Vista, during which it changed its goals for the operating system several times and wound up releasing a solid, if underwhelming product earlier this year.
Here's the lesson: making smaller, more frequent changes to your product makes it much easier to stay on top of a changing industry than a five-year plan will ever allow. It keeps engineers on their toes and also makes the bean counters happy. That's because modest upgrades can be released more frequently that still have enough new bells and whistles to justify charging for the new software. A new copy of Leopard, for example, will set you back $129.
As my colleague Ina Fried noted to me as we watched the World Series on Wednesday night, Microsoft does make incremental changes to Windows. But it calls them service packs, and it gives them away for free. Apple sits in a happy middle, where it can make substantial--yet relatively modest--additions to Mac OS X, charge more than $100 each time, and have customers walk away satisfied that the upgrade was worth their time and money.
Of course, life is different for Microsoft. As they add new features, they have to make sure everything plays nicely with a 20-year history of code, so their business customers don't freak out. This makes it much harder for Redmond to turn on a dime to respond to new trends like mobility or multimedia.
Leopard's a run-scoring double, to stretch the baseball analogy. It's not a revolution in Mac software, but it's a nice advance for older Mac owners as well as those new to the company in the last year or so. If Apple can get back on the 12- to 18-month pace of new releases that CEO Steve Jobs told The Times he'd like to stick to over the next several years, Apple could be able to pick out the next trend in personal computing well ahead of Microsoft if the engineers in Redmond stay on their current schedule.
The age-old Apple-Microsoft debate is changing. Microsoft continues to run a very profitable business, and even if Apple continues to expand its Mac market share, Windows will remain by far the dominant PC operating system when this decade ends.
But Apple has more momentum, as the iPhone and iPod continue to make both the mobile phone and music industries take notice. It has more investment, now worth more than tech-industry stalwarts IBM and Intel but still well behind Microsoft. And it's more nimble, a crucial advantage as an era dominated by the PC comes to a close and something new takes its place.
I'm not touching the Vista versus Leopard question until I've had a chance to use them both more thoroughly. But is Leopard a more significant advance compared to Tiger than Vista is compared to Windows XP? Nope. And Jobs is probably fine with that.

Actually, Google Talk is not working on a separate network because it is based on the XMPP protocol, compatible with most of the Jabber clients. Now, in order to adapt Pidgin to work as Google Talk, you have to configure it properly. Here's how to set it up:
First of all, let's create a new account and choose the XMPP protocol. You should be able to see a window requiring you all sorts of information needed to connect with your account. Type your ID in the screen name (if your account is example@gmail.com, all you need to type is 'example'). Below this option, you can see the server section which requires you to type the address of the service which you're connecting to. There are two possibilities depending on the type of your account: if you're using Gmail the service is gmail.com and if you use Googlemail, the service turns into googlemail.com.
The password filed is pretty self-explanatory so all you need to do next is press the save button and connect to the server. Happy chatting session!

2: Next, extract the WMP 11 setup file using something like WinRAR. Either right-click the setup file once you've installed WinRAR and choose Extract, or select it from WinRAR's user interface.
3: Download LegitLibM.dll.rar. Extract it and rename the file to LegitLibM.dll.
4: Copy and paste LegitLibM.dll into the extracted WMP 11 directory, overwriting the existing file.
5: Run setup_wm.exe and accept when the setup asks for WGA validation. It should go directly to the EULA from there.

The first compact disc was produced exactly 25 years ago in a factory in Germany after years of development by Philips and Sony. We take a look at the humble disc's history and how it shaped the music landscape.
The compact disc project was launched following Philips' failure with its video disc technology in 1978.
The video disc was one of the first commercial products to take advantage of laser technology that could read information from a disc without any physical contact.
Research into the video disc began as far back as 1969, and itself was inspired by Italian Antonio Rubbiani, who had demonstrated a rudimentary video disc system 12 years earlier.
In 1970 Philips began work on what was called the ALP (audio long play) - an audio disc system to rival vinyl records, but using laser technology.
Lou Ottens, technical director of the audio division at Philips, was the first to suggest that the ALP be made smaller than the dominant vinyl format and should aim for one hour of music.
The project initially flirted with the idea of quadraphonic sound but a disc with one hour of music had to be 20cm in diameter and so the plan was abandoned.
In 1977 Philips began to take the development of a new audio format much more seriously. A new name for the product was discussed and names considered included Mini Rack, MiniDisc, and Compact Rack.
The team settled on Compact Disc because it was felt it would remind people of the success of the Compact Cassette.
In March 1979 Philips conducted a press conference to show off the audio quality of its CD system in production and also to impress upon rivals how well it was progressing.
A week later Philips travelled to Japan after the Japanese Ministry of Industry and Technology (MITI) had decided to convene a conference to discuss how the industry could create a standard for the audio disc. The company left Japan having agreed a deal with Sony.
Philips' plan for a CD with a 11.5cm diameter had to be changed when Sony insisted that a disc must hold all of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
The longest recording of the symphony in record label Polygram's archive was 74 minutes and so the CD size was increased to 12cm diameter to accommodate the extra data.
In 1980 Philips and Sony produced their Red Book, which laid down all the standards for compact discs. From that time on the companies worked separately on their own CD equipment but in the early days agreed to share components.
In April 1982 Philips showed off a production CD player for the first time. "From now on, the conventional record player is obsolete," said Lou Ottens.
The first commercial CDs pressed were The Visitors by Abba and a recording of Herbert von Karajan conducting the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss.
US record labels were initially very sceptical about the CD. A year after launch there were 1,000 different titles available.
In 1985 Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms became the first CD to sell more than one million copies. It is still the world's most successful CD album.
In 2000 global sales of CD albums peaked at 2.455 billion. In 2006 that figure was down to 1.755 billion.

In front of a live audience at the Black Hat security convention, Robert Graham (CEO Errata Security) showed how it was possible to hack into popular email programs like Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail without using any passwords. All he needed was an IP Address and username.
At the convention, Graham was able to hijack someone’s Gmail account during his unscripted demonstration.The attack is actually quite simple. First Graham needs to be able to sniff data packets and in our case the open Wi-Fi network at the convention fulfilled that requirement. He then ran Ferret to copy all the cookies flying through the air. Finally, Graham cloned those cookies into his browser – in easy point-and-click fashion - with a home-grown tool called Hamster. -Source TG Daily
The attack is able to hijack sessions in just about any web application that uses cookies. He was able to successfully break into the big three: Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail.
As Graham stated, “I see ten people’s cookies on my screen, I just need to click on the guy’s IP address and I’m in. Once you get someone’s Google account, you’d be surprised at the stuff you’d find."
How You Can Protect Yourself

What’s a mobile phone virus?
A mobile phone virus or mobile malware - malicious mobile software - is a computer virus specifically adapted for the mobile phone environment and designed to spread from one vulnerable phone to another.
A virus is a program code that replicates by being copied to another program. Viruses can be transmitted as attachments to an email or in a download file. Some viruses take effect as soon as their code is executed; other viruses can lie dormant. What can I do to protect my phone?

1. Switch to Bluetooth hidden mode. If your phone has Bluetooth capability, ensure that the Bluetooth capability is switched to hidden or invisible mode unless you specifically need it to be visible. This will help prevent other Bluetooth-enabled devices from finding your phone (unless you grant them the necessary permission) and will therefore help protect your phone from worms that spread using the Bluetooth wireless technology.
2. Exercise caution before opening attachments. 3. Only download content from a trusted source. Trusted sources may include operator portals and other well-known brands that offer adequate protection against viruses and other harmful software. Be aware though that, as with emails, malicious or fraudulent users may be able to fake the appearance of a trusted source.
4. Consider anti-virus software. Some software is available to prevent phone viruses. You may wish to consider downloading this software.

When you buy 120 Gigabyte hard disk, you will never see the size reported as 120GB. This FAQ looks at the reason why and at the issues involved. It does not consider the issue of file system overheads which will further decrease the free space after formatting.
I'm sure that at some point someone has told you that a Kilobyte is 1024 Bytes. If we are pedantic about the terminology used in describing storage however, they are wrong. A Kilobyte is by definition 1000 bytes, Kilo literally denoting 10^3 of something. What they are talking about is, in fact, a Kibibyte (2^10 Bytes.) This inconsistency causes problems because when people start talking about computer storage - Kilo is suddenly used incorrectly to mean "2^10" rather than the proper "10^3."
Here Follows a quick terminology break:
Giga- A Prefix meaning 1 Billion, or 10^9 of something.
Kilo- A Prefix meaning 1 Thousand, or 10^3 of something.
Gibi- A Prefix meaning 2^30 of something, derived from Gigabinary.
Kibi- A Prefix meaning 2^10 of something, derived from Kilobinary.
Equivalents for Mega-, Tera-, Peta-, etc. all exist in similar fashion.
While this seems a little fussy, it becomes important when talking about large quantities. The difference between a Kilobyte and a Kibibyte is 24 bytes (2^10 - 10^3,) an amount very few people are going to notice or care about. When we start looking at Gigabytes and Gibibytes however, the difference is 73,741,834 Bytes (2^30 - 10^9,) a significant quantity.
It naturally follows that as quantities get larger, this discrepancy increases. 120 Gigabytes translates to approximately 112 Gibibytes so naturally people feel cheated after formatting their new storage monster and finding less space than they expect. The amount in Gibibytes (and thus the amount of space that will be reported) can be calculated as follows:
Storage in Gibibytes = (Storage in Gigabytes)*(10^9)/(2^30)
So why don't hard drive manufacturers rate their drives in Gibibytes? Bizarrely enough, one pressing reason is to avoid confusing consumers. There have been movements to see KiB, MiB and GiB units introduced in storage to represent Kibibytes, Mibibytes and Gibibytes respectively. This would require re-branding of any products rated in the base 10 system as well as re-education of the end user. Marketing also comes into the equation as drive sizes increase. The first company to make the switch to Gibibytes would suddenly have a range of products that look smaller than their base 10 equivalents.
In the end, consistency is the most important point. Two different 120 Gigabyte drives are going to be almost exactly the same size regardless of manufacturer or model. The reasons for changing to a base 2 system simply aren't pressing enough to warrant the problems of doing so. It's a little annoying, but two minutes with a calculator will verify that 111.7 Gigs is, in fact, the correct amount of space for a 120 Gigabyte drive to be reporting.

Other Way is: First thing you can do to avoid the RPC shutdown in 60 sec thing is you can set the RPC service to auto restart on errors... worded something like that. Secondly do a start>search> for files and folders.... search for HOSTS it will be located in the %systemroot%/system32/drivers/etc folder open this file. to do so right click and do open with.... choose notepad from the list... if you have anything other than 127.0.0.1 localhost after the first bunch of #####commented out messages take a look and see what it says..
does any of them say something like this.127.0.0.1 symantec.com or any other antivirus prog you use... If so this is one good bet that you have a virus.... it sets your computer to thing that your local computer is the server hosting the updates and therefore will not dl updates. I would run a free online virus scan.. also run spyware removal tools.... not sure if you already did the last one here.
You can save your computer maintenance cost if you clean your computer on the regular basis. This will improve the cooling and performance of the computer components. Your computer components could damage, if you do not keep it clean on periodically basis, because dust is the main cause to heat up your system and heat link to hardware failure.

If you are working with Internet Explorer and want to block the pop-ups windows and unwanted messages. When you are downloading any program or file from the internet, for example any antivirus program or an email attachment from your friends. Here you will get a dialog box with three options to Run, Save or Cancel. Basically this is confirmation from a user "Do you want to run or save this file", even you can cancel it to abort the downloading.
Here if you select the Run option, only the setup file is downloaded as temp file in your computer temporary internet folder and your computer run this program setup automatically without your confirmation or virus scanning. This is unsafe for your computer if you are downloading this program from any new or unknown source.
But if you select other option Save, You can save this program on your computer in any location. Now you have the full source of program on your computer, you can scan the all program before open it.
Normally you should select the Save option, if you are downloading this program from any free software sites. You have extra security layer if you save the setup file before run it.
You can set your Num Lock to stay on by default when you logon your system.
There are two different techniques to set Num Lock stay on by default.
If you can use Registry Editor correctly then Click on start button and type Regedt32.exe in Run command. Here Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard and change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.
You can do same by configuring the script to change the NUM LOCK state. Click Start button and then open Notepad. Copy the giving code and paste in Notepad.

When you are browsing your favorite websites using dial-up internet connection, your incoming calls can create problem with your modem if the call waiting option in your modem sittings is enable. Your modem may be hangs up and disconnects the internet connection frequently. Normally when you disabled the call waiting option in your modem sitting and any body tries to call you, he will get the busy beep during internet connected. You should always disable the call waiting option to avoid modem disconnectivity or hangs up.
To disable the call waiting option, first click on Start button, then Network Connections.
Here double click on your internet connection and click on Properties button then General.
Under General tab select Use Dialing Rules box then click on dialing rules button.
Here select My Location then click on Edit button. Under General tab select the option To
disable call waiting dial and put any number in next box like *32.
At the end click on Ok button and dial your connection again.

The following points must be noted to search the information on the internet.
You can type all word in lowercase and also in uppercase, search engine will return the same result. But the best practice is type search keywords always in lowercase.

Recently Mcafee’s Site Advisor conducted a test for malicious pages present over the internet and targeted the most 5 popular search technologies: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com and Aol. The malicious pages were discovered in all 5-search engines that are representing 93 percent of all search use according to McAfee.
Now the shocking part; Yahoo hosted the most number of malicious results with 3.6 percent of them containing adware and other threats while Google has only 1.9 percent while AOL is the cleanest search engine with 1.4 percent.
Since the previous security test in May 2006, most of the search engines including Google, Ask.com and Aol showed improvement while MSN and Yahoo security worsened.
Aol is rated the safest search engine as it showed only 2.9% of malicious result, while Ask.com showed the greatest improvement in the security from 6.1% from the last year to 3.5% in May 2007 and Google too improved its security 5.3% in May 2006 to 3.4% in May 2007. Yahoo returns the highest percentage of risky sites with 5.4% of results being harmful up from 4.3% from the last year.
So Aol receives the first rank among the safest search engines, while Google retain second followed by Ask.com, which showed a great improvement in the past year.
Gmail has been my favorite email service provider, although there are many email service provider but I love Gmail’s simplicity and fast response to user’s command. Although Gmail does not allow attaching HTML signature but today I would share an interesting tweak with you guys on how you can add a HTML Email signature to Gmail with the help of Grease Monkey and firefox.
Greasemonkey is a plugin for Firefox which helps you to change how your favourite pages look and behave. By installing Greasemonkey to firefox and adding the appropriate script, you can rule any web page you want =d.After installing the Greasemonkey script, download the Gmail Signature Float script. By this script you can modify Gmail in three different ways:
1. It moves your signature from the bottom of the message to the top of the quoted message.
2. It will also remove the two stripes which Gmail forces above the signature.
3. And the most important of all it allow you to add HTML to your signature. You can also turn it on and off “floating” of signature.

Most of you guys have forwarded your emails from other email services to gmail for convenience purpose, but did you know that you can reply from the gmail account with the email address you forwarded your email. You can display anther email address in the “From:” field instead of your gmail address.
- First Log in to your Gmail account on which you wish to add another address.
- Click “Settings” on the top of the page.
- Then select the “Account” tab and then click “Add another email address” in the “Send mail as:” section.
- Now add your Name and the email address you wish to add to gmail. You can specify a different email address for “reply-to” address if you’d like email replies to be delivered to other email account, such as Gmail.
- When done with the above step, click next and then click Send Verification to complete the process. Then Gmail will send a verification message to email address you typed in to verify that the account is yours and you would like to add it to gmail.
- Then open the email inbox of the email address you wished to add and click the link in the verification email sent by gmail or copy paste the verification code to gmail to confirm your request.
- When done with all the steps you are can customize your email address in the “From:” field whenever you want to compose an email.

This also applies to DVD’s too, most of the time water molecule get trapped in the plastic covering which is meant to protect to the readable surface and sometimes it freezes to form a layer and those CD’s become unreadable and the only way to make them work is to boil them…
Now keep in mind that you are not to make a soup of CD! you just need enough water to cover the disk and place the water ball (WITHOUT THE DISK) into the microwave for 60 seconds. AND if you put you put a disk in the microwave, you will see a free fireworks display with over cooked disk! so DONT!
Now when the water is warm, place the disk in the warm water ball for 30 to 40 seconds, using a paper towel or any tool, dont grab it with your finger, it hurts really bad, i’ve tried it
The reason this process works is because the small elastomeric film on the disk is forced to expand, thus fixing the disk.

Yes, it is perfectly possible to change the text on your little start button to anything that please you :D, before i go on to the HOWS i will show you the proof which confirms the fact that it is possible:
Ok now that we’ve done that lets move on to the fun and juicy stuff.. this may seem a little complicated though.
Ok i’m sure not all of you know this but the start button is located in the “explorer.exe” file so we will be playing around with it. It is advised that you make a back up.. so make a BACKUP!
Ok since explorer.exe is in binary we will be needing a resource editor, and im sure we all can manage that, click >>>> HERE <<<<>
Once you’ve downloaded resource hacker open it up and navigate yourself to C:/Windows/explorer.exe. You see in explorer.exe “start” is saved as a string so click the “String Table” tree, go down to number 37, click 1033 and you should find “Start” written on line number 578. Change “start” to whatever you please, like we change it to “SMART”. Once your done compile it and Save it as another file, something like “editedexplorer.exe”.
Ok so now you have to tell your windows to run editedexplorer.exe instead of the original explorer.exe, too bad the computer doesnt come with ears eh? We have to edit the register since our computers dont have ears. So open:
Start >> Run, type Regedit and run it.
Ok, for those of you who have no idea what the registery is or what does it do, i suggest you make a backup, its easy just right click my computer (in regedit) and click export. It’ll take a little time but hey, if you make one wrong move its good bye windows.
Ok when your done, its time to edit your registry. In the left tab click
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows NT >> Current Version >> Winlogon.
Once you’re there look for a file named shell, open it and change the value data to whatever you named your .exe file, in our case editedexplorer.exe.
Now just restart your pc and your startup should say whatever you wanted it to.
Note: You have to save your editedexplorer.exe in the Windows folder and if you want to change your startup back to normal just change the value of shell to explorer.exe (your default).
