Yahoo!, which owned GeoCities, has decided to close down GeoCities a free web hosting service provider which was immensely popular during the dot-com bubble era, with FTP and FrontPage support but no ads. But it’s going downhill since Yahoo! acquire it. Currently, all new registrations for new web space on GeoCities has been stopped, and the existing accounts are expected to be shutdown, deactivated and terminated by end of 2009. Visitor will be shown “Sorry, new GeoCities accounts are no longer available.” on GeoCities homepage.

So, to "celebrate" the shutting down of Geocities, Dreamhost is offering a free account for 2 years (usually priced at around $214.80) to 1000 GeoCities refugees.

I recently discovered a really cool feature in Vista (I think it isn’t available quite so readily in XP), which allows you to transform your computer into a phone really easily. Of course you’ll need a bluetooth capable mobile, and a bluetooth capable computer (or an adapter), but once you hook the two together you can import, export, sync and make calls without any external software. Take a look at my screenshot tour of how to do this, basically I am making my laptop a mirror of my phone contacts and using it as a headset for the phone.

1. Enabling bluetooth

The first thing you need to do is enable bluetooth on both devices. You should find bluetooth under connection settings on your phone, or some similar place. I use a Sony w880i, I have it under Settings, Connectivity, Bluetooth. Make sure to set your phone to visible, although this should be the default setting.

On your computer you should have a bluetooth icon in the tray. If you do, right click it, and select “show devices”. If you don’t see the icon there, go into your control panel and double click on “Bluetooth Devices”. This should take you to the same screen. If you don’t see bluetooth settings here, you might not have bluetooth capability, or you might need to install drivers.

2. Adding your device

On the Bluetooth Devices screen you might already see your phone, or you will need to click on “Add Wireless Devices” in the top menu. All devices which can be discovered should be listed after a few moments of searching, if you wait a few more moments, their names, brands, or types should also be visible.

Double click on the device you want to add, and you will be taken through a very simple procedure to add the device to your list. You will need to enter a code into a dialog on your computer, the code for it will be shown on the phone. Once done, your device will be listed on the Bluetooth Devices page.

3. Importing contacts

Double click on your newly listed device and you should see a screen similar to the one below. Select “Backup Contacts and Calendar Information from your Phone”. This will quickly copy all your contacts to the contacts folder in your user directory. You can now sync your contacts between your computer and phone. If supported you might be able to do the same with calendar items, emails and notes.

4. Using your computer as a phone

On the same page, you can see that at the top, you can enter a phone number and call the number. Doing this will work, but it will all be initiated only on the phone. Simply click connect next to the headset option “Use this computer as a headset or speakerphone for calls on your phone”. This will make your computer act like any other wireless headset, so any calls your receive or initiate can be conducted by just talking at your computer. I have a good speaker and a built in mic, so I don’t even have to stop working to talk to people.

The great thing is that you can also initiate a call by right clicking a contact, going to “actions” and clicking on “call this contact”. The call will be initiated from your phone, but since your laptop is your headset, there will be no need to touch your phone, or for it to be anywhere near you.

High Payouts From Microsoft PubCenter May Be Too Good To Be True!

Last week, Microsoft officially opened up PubCenter to the masses, allowing anyone from USA to sign up for the ad program. I have written about how Microsoft’s PubCenter, a self-serve third-party ad publishers platform through AdCenter, was doing well with private beta testers over the past year, with PubCenter paying significantly more than competitors Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher (one particular site owner says he is receiving from four times more in revenue from Microsoft than Google AdSense). We are now hearing and reading on PubCenter forums that since the program opened up to the public last week, revenue has plummeted and many publishers are switching back to AdSense due to the sudden drop in payouts.

One publisher, who wishes not to open his name, said that Microsoft has cut his payout by 80 to 90 percent and that many of the publishers on PubCenter are leaving to go back to AdSense. According to our source, this new revshare went into place on either the 18th or the 19th of April. Here’s a direct quote from the publisher: “Realistically, Microsoft’s payout has been too high from the beginning, but this drop puts it well below the scope of being remotely competitive and instead files it under ‘worthless.’”

On the private forums, many publishers are outraged by the sudden drop in revenue. We’ve lifted some of the comments from several different publishers who are using PubCenter:

“My earnings have gone down by about 50 % over the last few days. I typically do about 8500 a month with PubCenter-I was doing around 7500 with AdSense prior, so I welcomed a new player. Unfortunately, unless this trend changes it will be back to AdSense for me. The most annoying part is knowing that nothing on my site or traffic has changed but instead that someone decided to adjust the revshare numbers.”

“I’m not seeing any drop with the other [ad] networks recently…it’s just the way it was last month…but here it’s a very steep drop in the last 3 days or so . . . . I am not sure if some updates have been rolled out. This is definitely something to be concerned about since the numbers we are seeing over the past days bring serious concerns.”

“April 20th is the lowest eCPM I have seen since starting this program, much lower than my other programs.”

“I haven’t seen eCPM this low since I started. The past 3 days have been extremely concerning. As far as my impressions go, I have been usually at the high end of my average. My average CTR has improved…not sure why eCPM has declined so sharply.”

Google is in the driver’s seat when it comes to serving ads on third-party publisher sites. The company has more advertisers chasing all those impressions, which tends to drive bidding way up. So even though Google only shares a small amount with publishers, they can outpay competitors like Yahoo and Microsoft. That means Microsoft may have to actually take a loss revenue sharing just to get in the game. Their total revenue per click may actually be lower than what Google pays out in a revenue share, meaning to win publishers Microsoft may have to share more than 100% of revenue. That gets expensive fast.

Microsoft has finally compiled the final RTM version of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. As usual, the setup installer for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 have been leaked to Internet for free download by all, way ahead of official Microsoft release.

Searching documents through website or search engine could be time consuming. Typically, the search result could be a long list of URLs, then you need to go into each of the URL to download the right document. Now, there is a Firefox add-on, named as OutWit Docs that can help you find documents from any website by returning search result related to documents only.

OutWit Docs looks for text files, spreadsheets, presentations in various formats such as PDF, MS Office, Openoffice documents, RTF, CSV and etc. It is simple and easy to use. Once you have installed it, you will notice there is an OutWit Doc icon appeared beside the address bar. You just need to perform search to the desired documents through any website or search engine. Advertising revenue is one of the main sources of income for many website publishers. Website publishers display relevant ads on their websites and get income when visitors click on the ads. The working principle is quite straightforward. However, there is always a dilemma for newbies - where is the ideal location to place the ads on the site? Certain locations tend to be more successful than others and help to generate more clicks and indirectly more revenue to publishers.

If you are having the same problem and you are using the WordPress publishing application, you should probably consider adding the Heatmap Plugin. Once in a while, the shortcut icons on the Windows desktop may suddenly been changed or became blank or ‘white paper’ icon, where supposedly the icons should be colorful and customized in style and color. It’s as if the icon for the shortcut has been removed or unassigned, and been replaced with default blank icon in white.

The bug happens whenever there is corruption in icon cache database. For example, in Windows 7 pre-RC release, a network connection or broadband connection shortcut’s icon placed on desktop by user manually will go haywire and turn into blank default icon if there is another third-party program places an icon on desktop later.

In order to fix the problem where shortcut icons turn to blank icon, try to refresh or rebuild the cache database for icons. There are many system management software utilities that may reset the icon cache db automatically, but here’s how to reset the icon cache db manually.

To refresh and reset the icons cache, go to the following folder:

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\

To see the hidden AppData folder, go to Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View tab, and select Show hidden files, folders and drives, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

Once inside the folder, delete IconCache.db. Create a new file named IconCache.db, and set it to Read Only attribute in Properties (if the file is not read only, the cache won’t be reset). Then restart the computer. Remove the Read Only attribute of IconCache.db file, and the icons cache will be refreshed. The step will restore the desktop shortcut icons to their lawfully icons.

After a long wait, Microsoft has finally identified 11th May 2009 as the official release date for its latest Windows Mobile 6.5, in conjunction with TechEd 2009 conference. During the session, IT professional and developer will be given a demonstration of the operating systems and a list of planned changes.

The TechEd visitors also have the option to attend separate session on version 6.5 topics such as touch, gesture commands and monetize program that help developers to sell windows phone application through Windows Marketplace. Based on the earlier Microsoft announcement, the latest Windows 6.5 is targeted to minor updates that focus on changes to the user interface and its Touch friendliness.

YouTube has once again been blocked by the Government of China and therefore users in China are unable to access or watch videos on the popular video sharing website.

Whenever a hard drive is formatted in Windows a serial number is assigned in the end. This serial number is often used by software applications to restrict a software installation to that hard drive or reduce the number of allowed activations by one by linking the serial number of the hard drive to one of the allowed activations.


This should not be confused with the hardware serial number that gets added in the manufacturing process. The Hard Disk Serial Number Changer (link) can change the serial number that gets assigned when a hard drive is formatted in Windows. This can be really useful if an existing hard drive has to be formatted without loosing an activation or software association. ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has resolved to build Pakistan in accordance with the dream and aspirations of the great visionary Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

President Zardari in his message on the 71st death anniversary of Allama Iqbal, said Pakistan can be best built by understanding Islam in the light of Allama Iqbal’s teachings and by refusing to let armed militants impose their interpretation of Islamic thought and morality on the people through guns and bullets. “This indeed is the best tribute we can pay to Allama Iqbal today.”

A new version of the popular web browser Firefox is currently distributed to all major and minor Firefox mirror sites to be ready for the usual traffic demand when millions of Firefox users try to update their web browser to the latest version. Both the update check in the web browser and the links on the Mozilla website are still listing Firefox 3.0.8. as the latest available version of the browser.

The Mozilla web development team does not want websites to draw attentions to their mirror sites during the distribution phase. Interested users can download it from various third party download sites like Betanews which unfortunately does only host English language versions of the latest Firefox (Linux, Mac).

The changelog lists the following updates and changes to previous versions of the web browser:

• Fixed several security issues.
• Fixed several stability issues.
• Many users experienced an issue where a corrupt local database caused Firefox to close its stored cookies. (bug 470578)

It is not uncommon that dozens or even hundreds of audio and video codecs get installed on a computer system over time. Some are installed by applications, some by codec packs and some manually by the user. Besides compatibility and playback problems that can arise out of this it also means that video codecs stop working properly. Many of these codecs might not be needed depending on the video player in use. SMPlayer for example uses binary codecs that do not need to be installed making many of the installed video codecs redundant.

Video Sniper is a portable software program for the Windows operating system that will display all audio and video codecs that are installed on a computer system. The codecs are listed by class, name, path and name, version and most importantly status.

The status is either ok or broken. The latter meaning that the codec is not properly installed on the computer system anymore. These codecs - and actually all the others - can be deleted easily by pressing the delete button in the application. The delete button will work on all installed codecs on the computer system which means users should be very careful before pressing the delete button.

Another option provided by the software program is to save the list of codecs in text format on the computer system.

Microsoft has released the long awaited release candidate build of their upcoming Windows 7 operating system according to a post on Windows 7 News. The post refers to a page on the Microsoft Partner Program website containing a download link for the Windows 7 release candidate that is currently only available to selected partners. It is however very likely that it will be activated for all partners soon.

Interested users without a subscription to MSDN or Technet will have to wait until May 5 before they can download the release candidate as this is the date when it will be publicly released by Microsoft. The page containing the download link does not contain any additional information about the release candidate but the race has begun to post the first screenshots and information about the release candidate.

It is very likely that the release candidate will leak to P2P networks (most likely originating from Russia or China as the other leaks came from those countries as well) soon and that many users will start downloading the new build from there.

Long awaited 3G license is likely to be auctioned in three to four weeks, reported “The Peninsula” of Qatar, citing an interview with Hafeezur Rehman, Federal Secretary for Information Technology and Telecom.

Paper further quotes that policy for launching 3G services has already been submitted to the federal cabinet, and its matter of just few weeks to auction 3G spectrum.

He said despite the global recession and a worrying security situation the
government wants the 3G services to be available for the Pakistani cellular
customers.

He said the base price for auction of the spectrum will be decided by the
cabinet besides the policy decision whether the existing operators only will be
allowed to participate or more international companies will be invited. “The;
ministry has also submitted its recommendations op these matters; but the final
decision rests with the federal cabinet,” he added.

He said the policy in this regard will not be discriminating for existing
companies or new entrants and the base price will also be set keeping in view
the international recession and market trends. He said that the 3G services will
be provided in a three phase process.

Technology Review reports that researchers have been able to hijack mobile phone connections and data.

In a presentation today at Black Hat Europe, a computer-security conference in Amsterdam,
a group of researchers claimed to have found a way to hijack the data sent to
and from mobile phones. The researchers say that the attack might be used to
glean passwords or to inject malicious software onto a device.
Mobile phones
are becoming ever more useful for transmitting data in addition to making voice
calls, and they’re increasingly being used for sensitive activities such as
online banking, as well as for searching the Internet and downloading mobile
games.

The new attack relies on a protocol that allows mobile operators to
give a device the proper settings for sending data via text message, according
to Roberto Gassira, Cristofaro Mune, and Roberto Piccirillo, security
researchers for Mobile Security Lab, a consulting firm based in Italy. By
faking this type of text message, according to the protocol an attacker can
create his own settings for the victim’s device. This would allow him to, for
example, reroute data sent from the phone via a server that he controls. The
researchers say that the technique should work on any handset that supports the
protocol, as long as the attacker knows which network the victim belongs to and
the network does not block this kind of message.

Eight years ago I boarded a plane to the United States to come to college. I was 17. As I left, my father hugged me and told me to never come back because he believed that soon Pakistan would not be a country fit for me to live in. I told him he was trying to save money by not having to buy me tickets to come home. We laughed it off. I hugged him goodbye and that day my father and I began our great debate about the fate of Pakistan . Abba told me to stay away. I defied him every time. I came home twice a year. I only flew PIA. I refused to do an internship in the US I worked every summer in Pakistan . I moved back when college ended. I started work in Pakistan . I worked two jobs because there was so much to do and not enough time to do it in. I was inspired and energised. I was hopeful and optimistic.

Today I am neither. And I have lost the debate with my father about the fate of Pakistan. The Parliament by endorsing the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation (NAR) has heralded the end of Pakistan as I knew and loved it. Today, the elected representatives of the people turned Pakistan into Talibanistan. Today we handed over a part of the country to them. I wonder how much longer before we surrender it all.

Today we legislated that a group of criminals would be in charge of governing and dispensing justice in a part of Pakistan according to their own obscurantist views. They have declared that the rulings of their courts will be supreme and no other court in the land can challenge them. They have also declared that their men that killed and maimed innocent civilians, waged war against the Pakistani army and blew up girls schools will be exempt from punishment under this law. A law that does not apply equally to all men and women is not worthy of being called a law. Hence today we legislated lawlessness.

What was most disturbing was the quiescence of the Parliament to this legislation. The utter lack of debate and questioning of this ridiculous legislation was appalling. The decision was not informed by any independent research or expert testimony, and to my knowledge none of the parliamentarians are authorities on matters of security, rule of law or regional conditions in Swat. This signals disturbing possibilities. Either our politicians are too afraid to stand up to criminals or maybe they don't possess the foresight to gauge the national impact of this action. There is no hope for a country led by cowards or fools.

How can one be hopeful about the political future of a country where the will and the wisdom of politicians becomes hostage to the threats of barbarians? How can I be optimistic about a country where doyens of the media like Ansar Abbasi hear the collective silence of the parliamentarians as the resounding support of the people of Pakistan , but are deaf to the threats issued by the Taliban to anyone opposing the legislation? How can I feel secure in a country where the army, despite receiving the largest chunk of our resources, cannot defeat a bunch of thugs? How can I expect justice when there are different laws for different citizens, and I as a woman am a second class citizen? How can I be inspired by a country where there is no culture, no music, no art, no poetry and no innovative thought?

How can I be expected to return to a country where women are beaten and flogged publicly, where my daughters will not be allowed to go to school, where my sisters will die of common diseases because male doctors cannot see them? How can I be expected to call that country home that denies me the rights given me by my Constitution and religion? I refuse to live in a country where women like me are forced to rot behind the four walls of their homes and not allowed to use their education to benefit the nation. By endorsing the NAR and giving in to the Taliban, Parliament has sapped my hope and optimism. Parliament has dealt a deathly blow to the aspirations of the millions of young Pakistanis who struggle within and outside the country, fuelled by sheer patriotism, for a peaceful, prosperous and progressive Pakistan .

When there is no hope, no optimism, no security, no justice, no education, no progress, no culture � there is no Pakistan . Maybe it is because I am the grandchild of immigrants who was raised on stories of hope, patriotism and sacrifice that even in this misery I cannot forget that Pakistan was created to protect the lives, property, culture and future of the Muslims of the Subcontinent. It was not established to be a safe haven for terrorists. We fought so that we could protect the culture of the Muslims of the Subcontinent, not so that we could import the culture of Saudi Arabia . Our ancestors laid down their lives so that the Muslims of the Subcontinent � both men and women - could live in a land free of prejudice, not so that they could be subjected to violent discrimination of the basis of sect and gender.

Maybe it's because I'm competitive and I don't want to lose the debate to my father, maybe I am afraid to lose the only home I have, or maybe because I love Pakistan too much to ever say goodbye � I hope we can remember the reasons why we made Pakistan, and I hope we can stand up to fight for them. I hope we can revive the spirit of national unity of 1947 and lock arms to battle the monster of the Taliban that threatens our existence. Talibanistan is an insult to my Pakistan . I want my country back. Pakistan Paaindabad!

I was not going to write anything since i am that much disappointed by both what is happening around us and the views held by many despite the carnage that is there for us to see.. Still i will write once more because i can say openly here what i feel today. Who knows what will happen to people like me tomorrow?

Accepting their demands has meant that all they did is justified...something i shall never ever accept as a staunch Muslim and Pakistani.
I will never legitimize the atrocities committed by TTP.
Look at the TNSM and TTP reps, do they feel ashamed for the way they have waged war on Pakistanis/Muslims?
Do they look embarrassed at all for destabilizing this country?
Do they accept the atrocities they have committed?
They gave a blanket statement that no innocent has been killed by TTP...My god do we really expect such rascals to uphold any value of Islam?
How can we expect anything from their kind but cosmetic Bullshit only, like ceremonial punishments and implementation of utterly nonsense things as mandatory beards?

What TTP is fighting for is not Islam and i strongly disagree that we are to blame only for lack of knowledge...We are to blame more for lack of action!!!

I am not that ignorant of Islam and its values. I have read a lot of history as well but what good is it when i raise my voice and they will call me an infidel...who the hell has given them the right to declare who is infidel?
Anyone who opposes their demands is an infidel?
What is in someone's heart is known only to Allah and to call someone an infidel for opposing their views is a forte of TTP and their supporters.

What have the Taliban brought upon the land?
Suicide bombings, butchering of all opponents, forced submission of influential families, open threats to all citizens of Pakistan, ban on woman's education, woman's confined role in society.
Are we that dumb and helpless that anyone can say Islam and Shariat and we shall vacate our motherland for them???

Their holier than thou attitude alone is enough to boil my blood but to carry out all sort of atrocities in the name of Islam is something that is unbelievable and unacceptable, at least to me.

TTP are really nothing more than an army of destruction who are abusing the name of Islam and forcing it down our throat.

We were free to practice our religion but now it shall be their way or the highway.
It is the era of mandatory beard, regulated hair cuts, mandatory shalwar above the ankles, burqa clad women and all shall be enforced by the loving hands of the Taliban.

Regarding equality.. who gives a damn.. certainly from Islamic law, justice and equality perspective the TTP shall have to be publicly executed for that is the penalty for spreading such mischief in a Muslim State and trying to rebel against a government which has the support of the majority.
As the Prophet (PBUH) said.
You are organized under the rule of a person and someone tries to break your collectivity apart or disrupt your government, kill him. (Muslim: No. 1852)

Only two sort of people are mentioned in the Quran who should be seen as killers of humanity and by both accounts TTP fully qualify...

AlQuran:
He who killed a human being without the latter being guilty of killing another or of spreading disorder in the land should be looked upon as if he had killed mankind altogether, and he who saved a human being should be regarded as though he saved all mankind. (5:32)

Moving forward...
Hadd punishment is fixed by Allah or Allah’s Messenger and hence cannot be reduced or waived or enhanced by the Imam or the Qadi. However, if the crime is not proved according to the standard of Islamic Shariah (which is very strict and foolproof), then the judge would award Tazir or discretionary punishment according to the nature and extent of the crime and the evidence available.
The punishment of Tazir is not fixed by the law-giver but is left to the discretion of the Head of the State or Qazi.

Punishment for drinking in Prophet's (PBUH) time was kicking and punching, it changed to 40 stripes in Abu Bakar's (RA) time and 80 stripes in Umar's (RA) time when the situation demanded.
It was only the prerogative of the Prophet (PBUH) to regard something as part of the Shariah and if he had done so in a particular case then Abu Bakar and Umar (RA) would never have altered the punishment!
The Prophet (PBUH) did not punish the drinkers as part of divine punishment but as a Muslim ruler and the same was carried on by his successors who saw different punishments to fit this act, had this punishment been as per a divine law, why would it be altered?
Consequently, it can be concluded that the punishment of drinking is not a Hadd; it is a Tazir and therefore the parliament of an Islamic State can legislate afresh in this regard.

Allah has defined certain boundaries clearly and the rest is up to the state to decide and implement, if people are not happy with the state they can protest but no one has the right to start an armed rebellion and commit atrocities in the name of Shariah and Islam!

Tell me then under which Shariah does the beard length,hair cut, shuttle **** Burqah and shalwar above the ankle fall under???
Under which Shariah is it legitimate to sanction abduction/killing of government employees of a Muslim country?
Under which Shariah is it ok to kill those who oppose your views?
Under which Shariah is it ok to sanction suicide attacks?
Under which Shariah is it ok to blow girls school and restrict women to the confines of their homes?
Under which Shariah is it permissible to terrorize all the citizens of a Muslim country in the name of Islam?

Clearly either i have become incredible dull or something is drastically wrong in our understanding of Islamic values and Shariah, to cause people to perceive TTP struggle as one for the true Shariah.

A sad day indeed to see such hesitancy and doubt in the hearts and minds of the populace.
What hope is left for Pakistan if its sons and daughters do not know where they stand?

A similar damage was done by Arabs who waged war within the Muslim state and bickered about how the Ottoman government was not pious enough, look what happened in the long run?

Long Live PAKISTAN!!!
