Kate Gosselin might have a lot on her plate, but that hasn’t stopped this prolific babymaker from being a prolific writer as well. Her third book is due (pun!) on October 13, but it’s not a tell-all account about her on-the-rocks marriage with Jon, or anything that I might actually be interested in reading. Instead, she is gracing our kitchens with her very own cookbook. Yep, that’s right, it’s called Love Is in the Mix: Making Meals Into Memories. But, of course, Kate isn’t just giving us any previews of her tasty recipes. After the jump, the ingredients we’re expecting.
- 4 cups of nutritious recipes
- 2 1/2 cups of tips on how to eat organically
- 1 cup advice on how to feed a family on a budget
- 3/4 cup photos of Kate and her family
- A pinch of who the eff cares
- 1 tsp advice on how to handle picky eaters
- 1 tbs anecdotes about Kate and her fam
- 1/2 cup advice on how to plan meals for vacations plus a drop of how would you know
- 2 tbs of ways to make lunch fun
Kate is no more qualified to write a book on cooking than I am to write one on dating. Critics are already slamming her cookbook saying that most of the receipes are plagarized. They say her “Monkey Munch” can be found on the Chex website. Kate once said, “Real cooks don’t need recipes,” but what she should of said was, “Real cooks don’t need my recipes.” Thanks but no thanks, Kate!
So you went ahead and purchased that System 76 laptop or you decided to finally install Linux on your laptop. You now have a Linux based laptop with a webcam. But how do you take advantage of this hardware? You want to be able to use that web cam to upload photos to facebook (or the like), but are not sure exactly how to use your hardware. It’s simple with a handy little tool called Cheese.
Cheese is not one of those applications that is going to make or break your desktop experience. But it certainly will enhance it. You can take standard pictures and even add effects to those pictures And Cheese doesn’t just do pics, it can do videos as well.
Getting and installing
Even though Cheese is a part of the GNOME desktop, it isn’t always installed by default. To install Cheese open up your Add/Remove Software utility, search for “cheese” (no quotes), select the results, and click Apply. To start Cheese look in the Graphics submenu of the Applications menu.
When you fire Cheese up it will instantly start seeing you. Figure 1 shows me stalking a penguin through the eyes of Cheese. You will also see two photos I have already taken of myself.
To snap a photo of yourself place yourself in the position (or goofy face) you want and press the Take A Photo button.
When the photo is snapped it will appear in the lower pane of the application.
Now those photos you have taken have not been saved. You must actually save them before you can use them. To save a photo right click the photo and select “Save As”. By default photos are saved in the ~/Pictures/Webcam directory and can only be saved in .jpg format.
From that same right menu you can choose to send a picture to a removeable device, import the photo into F-Spot, open the photo, or send the photo to the trash. There is one other option “Set as Account Photo”, which is supposed to set a photo to your About me and your login photo. I have yet to get this to work.
Effects
You can even add effects to a photo. You actually add the effects before the photo is taken, and you can add more than one effect if you like. To add effects click the Effects button to list all of the possible effects.
As you click on an effect it will be highlighted. Click on as many effects as you like, but know that the more effects you add the slower Cheese will get (especially when adding effects like Vertigo and Warp.)
After you select the effects you want click the Effects button again and you will be returned to the normal screen, only now your photo will be “enhanced” by the effects you have chosen.
You can see the right photo of me was with the Vertigo and the Warp effects running.
Countdown
You will notice, in the Cheese main menu, a Countdown entry. If this entry is checked there will be a delay in the photo taking (so you can make yourself as photogenic as possible.) If you would prefer instant results uncheck that entry and photos will be snapped as soon as you hit the Take a Photo button.
Final thoughts
Cheese is not going to make you a more productive worker. In fact, it’s just fun enough that it might make you a less productive worker. But when you need that interface to your trusty webcam, just say “Cheese” and you’ll be ready every time.
Spam is a big problem for everyone on the internet and forums are no different. It’s a constant battle between forum admins to prevent it and spammers to get past the protection attempts. In this short ‘forum tip’ we’ll give 3 quick and easy ways to help prevent spam on your phpBB3 forum.
Stop registrations from Baker Island Time
phpBB community user jalaln has written a very simple (1 edit) mod to prevent registrations from the UTC -12 timezone. You can view this mod on the phpBB forums here.
‘But why?’. Most spam bots will choose this time zone in the sign up process. Sure, this mod wont stop ALL bots but it is very quick and easy to install and will prevent some spam.
‘But won’t this stop real users?’ The answer is no. Baker Island is an uninhabited island between Hawaii and Australia, you can read more about Baker Island on Wikipedia.
Making use of profile fields
Using the same idea as above that bots will choose the first option on a drop down list this anti-spam technique makes use of a default phpBB3 feature: Custom profile fields. Our phpBB3 tutorial here explains how!
Moderating new member’s first posts
Almost all spam bots won’t introduce themselves and just start to spam as soon as they sign up. Moderating new member’s first posts prevents them from even starting. The disadvantage of this technique is that is prevents real users from posting as soon as sign up however if you as admin are on daily then most users won’t mind. This is a default setting in phpBB3, our tutorial here explains how to turn it on.
Hope that helps! (:
KILL THE SPAMMERS, BEFORE THEY KILL THE INTERNET!
Fight spam and trouble makers by moderating new member's first post. This provides a new method of user validation on top of email confirmation and admin activation.
Login to your admin panel and select the General tab
Then select Post settings from the Board configuration menu:
Scroll down to the second box headed Posting
Set Enable queued posts to Yes. This doesn't effect the post queue permissions on the forums and applies board wide. Set the Maximum post count for queued posts option to 1, or however many posts you want to moderate a new member for.
New members will not be able to post without approval until their post count reaches that of the maximum post count value you've just set. Unapproved and deleted posts do not count towards a users post count so even if a user makes 5 posts after registering all will go into the queue until the number approved is equal to the maximum post count you've set.
These settings can be used to validate new members and stop spam from being posted on your forum.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services based on access numbers is rapidly gaining popularity across the world. And Australia is no exception to the same. One of such services that Australia has already used in the recent years is Aussicall. A fairly new player in the market of access number based VOIP provider is Callr.com.au. This VOIP service provider offers free voip international calls to many countries across the world.
The coverage area of this service provider includes countries like India and Bangladesh in Asian subcontinent as well along with many countries of the western world. If someone checks the list provided for countries of connectivity, the list is has approximately 100 countries. Some of the countries and their codes are highlighted pink in color. The puzzle of different colors in the list is answered at the bottom of the page. There, at the bottom of the list is mentioned that only the countries highlighted in pink are supported by Callr.com.eu are connected at the present moment.
Any person who resides in Australia can make these free international calls using Callr.co.au. They just need to use their single access number, 0404446663. The calls are offered at no extra cost to the users. A person can use a landline phone or a mobile phone to make these calls. To make the process simpler and cheaper, the local phone service providers in Australia offer various package deals. These package deals offer a particular number of free minutes to make local calls across Australia. A person is free to use these free minutes of the package deals to make calls to their access number. You are assured to be charged only for the local mobile rates. There are no overcharges or any hidden charges for the usage of these free minutes.
The service provided by Callr.com.au is beneficial for all people of Australia who have friends, families, or business associates outside Australia. But the group that benefits the most from the services provided by Callr.com.au is the student community. Many students from all over the world leave their families and homes behind and come to study in this country. The student community in this country can save a lot of money they spend making calls to their home countries. The service is provided not only to the residents of the country, but also to the business persons and tourists who travel to this wonderful country for a short duration. They must call 0424-215-379 to connect to their people outside Australia.
Though the service provider gives a good voice quality and ease of dialing, the callers must be aware of certain things before they use the free calling services provided by Callr.com.au. The callers may experience connection errors if making calls at some specific hours of the day. For example, the evening hours are the peak hours, and most of the callers may experience some or the other problem while trying to connect at this point of time.
In spite of some minor hiccups, the services are superb. If you are in Australia, connect to Callr.com.au & let us know your feedbacks.
A walkthrough guide to using phpBB3's custom profile fields to help prevent spam bots registering on your forum.
Introduction
Custom profile fields are a feature of phpBB3. They allow you, as admin, to easily add fields that a user can fill out to their profile - such as location, age and so on. It is possible to use a custom profile field to help and prevent spam bots from registering on your forum.
Adding a new custom profile field
Firstly you need to login to your admin forum and click the Users and groups tab
From the left hand menu select the Custom profile fields from the Users menu
This will show all the custom profile fields currently added. Add a new one from the box in the bottom right of the page.
Use a name in the textbox such as 'stop_spam' or 'no_spam' (17 characters max, a-z and underscores only allowed). Select Dropdown box from the dropdown box and click Create field
The settings
You'll now be shown a more detailed form. The field type and identification fields should already be filled in. Make sure that the Display profile field option is set to Yes and the Display on registration screen and Required field options are checked.
Enter some text for the bottom 3 boxes. In this tutorial the Field title is Are you a spambot?, the description is Sorry we have to ask and the options are just Yes and No.
Once you've entered this text click Profile type specific options and you'll be taken to the next stage in adding the custom profile field.
The default settings here should be fine. Both drop down boxes need to be set to Yes. This means that "Yes" is the default option when on the registration page and that a value of "Yes" will cause an error. This means that whoever is registering will have to change this value to "No" - the idea being a spam bot would not know to do this so won't be able to sign up to your forum. Click the Language specific options button. This will allow you to translate the text you entered (Are you a spam bot, etc) in step 1 to any other languages installed on your forum. Once that has been completed click Save.
That's it! This won't stop all spam bots however it will help to prevent some spam and it is a very easy system to implement.

A first batch of third party applications that have been optimized for the Windows 7 operating system have been released in the last weeks. Gmail Notifier Plus is already the second application that is making good use of the new taskbar features of the Windows 7 operating system. The program will display unread email messages and other information and links related to the Gmail account directly in the Windows 7 taskbar.
The two main features are the following: Feature 1 displays previews of each unread email message right in the Windows 7 taskbar. It makes it possible to preview each unread email message right there and go to the Gmail account with the click of the button.
The second feature is the Gmail jumplists. Jumplists basically display information and links to common tasks. The Gmail jumplists displays the unread email messages of the Gmail account; Again with the possibility to access the account with the click of the button. Common tasks like going to the inbox or writing a new email are displayed in the jumplist as well which allow a user to quickly access some of the most used features of Google Mail.
Gmail Notifier Plus is only compatible with Windows 7 and can be downloaded at the Neowin forum.

Are you paranoid? Are you afraid that someone is going to get ahold of data they sholdn’t have? I am. And because of that I often encrypt files with a gpg key that was given to no one. With those encrypted files I know they are secure to most of the general public. And because I tend to use lengthy passkeys for gpg, cracking them is a challenge.
Naturally I use gpg for all of this. And when I am using gpg I am using it from the command line. It’s actually quite easy to use. In this article I will show you how to create a gpg key, encrypt, and decrypt a file. You will find this such an easy task you’ll be using it more than you think. Must I install?
More than likely, if you have a modern Linux distribution, gpg is already installed. If you issue the command which gpg and you get something like /usr/bin/gpg returned, you know you have gpg installed. If you don’t see that you can install it by issuing one of these commands:
sudo apt-get install gnupg
or
yum install gnupg
Once installed you will first have to generate a key. This, too, is done from the command line.
Generate your key
To generate a key issue the command:
gpg –gen-key
Once you enter that you will be asked a number of questions pertaining to your key. These should all be fairly obvious. After you complete the generation of your key make sure you remember the username for the key as well as the passphrase.
Encrypting files
Now let’s get into the good stuff - encrypting files. To encrypt a file with gpg you will use the command structure:
gpg OPTIONS FILE
Because you are encrypting you will have to use the e option. And because you will want to encrypt the file with a specific users’ gpg key you will use the r option. So let’s say you are going to encrypt the file TEST.tgz with the gpg key of user jlwallen. To do this you would issue the command:
gpg -e -r jlwallen TEST.tgz
The resulting file would be TEST.tgz.gpg. If you tried to view the file you would instantly see it is now a binary file. If you try to untar the file you would be informed the file is not in gzip format.
Decrypting the file
Decrypting the file is just as easy as encrypting the file. We’ll stick with the same example. To decrypt the file TEST.tgz.gpg issue the command:
gpg -d -o TEST.tgz TEST.tgz.gpg
You will be prompted for the passphrase associated with the user encryption key used on the file. The d option indicates you are decrypting the file and the o option indicates what file to output the results to. After this command is issued you will be back to the TEST.tgz file.
Final thoughts
Sure there are plenty of gui tools that will make this job even easier. But there are too many instances when needing the command line will enable you to do things you can’t do with a gui.
Yesterday I sat down at my main desktop PC to do some work and, out of nowhere, error message after error message popped up informing me the hard drive was at 100% capacity which meant the operating system had no room to write to. This baffled me as I was 100% sure there should have been over 60 gigs of space available. My first inclination was to search for larger files that might have grown out of hand - torrents especially.
After much searching I saw nothing. I even started at the / directory and was coming up with nothing. So naturally I went right to the log files. Believe it or not, it was not in the log files that I discovered where the problem was. Of course I thought I should share this experience with ghacks in order to illustrate how troubleshooting a Linux machine can go.
After the futile manual file search for files I went to the logs. The first log I went to (which is the first log I always turn to) dmesg which prints the message buffer from the kernel. To view this you just type dmesg at the terminal window. This was my first strike as the kernel buffer knew nothing of my capacity drive.
My next step was to head on over to /var/log and take a peek around any of the log files that might offer up a clue as to why my hard drive was maxed out. My instincts always take me to /var/log/messages first. This particular log file keeps track of general system information regarding boot up, networking. Another strike.
At this point I realized I had to take a break and clear some space because the warnings wouldn’t stop. I doubled checked to make sure the reports were correct by issuing the command:
df -h
which confirmed that /dev/sda1 was at 100% usage. I managed to free up a couple of gigs of space by deleting some torrents. The errors went away and I could continue working.
My next step was to check the size of my proxy logs and Dansguardian logs. I had to move both systems over to my main desktop and had a feeling those logs needed to be rotated. I was right, but it didn’t solve my problem. The tiny prox logs weren’t huge (by any stretch of the imagination), but they were many. So I deleted the older logs and moved on.
I was running out of log files to check and nothing had given me any idea what was going on.
Search and destroy
It was time to go back to the search method. But instead of using the manual method (how long would it take to weed through the ENTIRE Linux file system - I didn’t want to know) I opted to employ a little help thanks to the find command. The find command allows you to add switches to your search to indicate file size. In my case I wanted to first see if there were any files larger than 100 MB in size. To do this I will issue the command:
find / -size +1000000k -print0 | xargs -0 ls -l
as either root or using sudo. What this command does is tell find to search for files > 1000MB and send them to the standard output (that’s basically the terminal window), and pipe them to xargs so that you can see the detailed list (using “-l” of ls). Because I was starting at the root directory, I knew this would take some time.
It did. But after some time I discovered five files that were each 12 gigs in size in /var/cache/. These files were from a backup program I was working with and forgot to disable. So once a week my entire /home directory was being backed up. I deleted the files (recovering sixty gigs of space) and disabled the backup program. Problem solved.
Final thoughts
There are times when even the best logging system available will not tell you what you need to know. At those times you have to employ your best sluething techniques. Fortunately the Linux operating system encourages these types of administration tricks.
A new beta version of the Windows edition of Skype 4.1 has been released today. The new version adds several new features to the voice over IP client that increase its value for end users and business alike. Probably the most popular change is the addition of screen sharing which makes it possible to share part or all of the computer screen with contacts. This can be quite interesting for people working in IT to get a visual of what the user is doing that is causing the problem. It could also be interesting for presentations and demonstrations.
Another interesting addition is the contact importer which allows users to import contacts from services like Gmail or Aol. These contacts can now also be send again to other Skype users. Old time Skype users might remember that the feature was already implemented in Skype 3 but got removed in previous versions of Skype 4. Configuring birthday reminders is another feature that is making a comeback in Skype 4.1 Beta.
Windows users can download the beta of Skype 4.1 (via Download Squad) from the official homepage. Keep in mind that betas should not be installed in productive environments.
A pdf containing the Skype 4.1 release notes is available on the same website as well.

I just got this video about, How to install Voip on iPod/iPhone ? and thought to share with free voip calls readers.
See this and give your comments..
Some more helpful points can be:
Add this source to sources:
touchmods.net/rep.xml
- Add the source touchmods.net/rep.xml to sources.
- Refresh sources and go to install in installer.
- Scroll down to Touchmods and open folder.
- Install Sip-Voip.
- When done installing, finally, restart your iPod.
Maybe you’ll find it hard to believe but there are a great number of people - especially in my part of the world - who are still not familiar with the whole concept of using and downloading with torrents. This popular file-sharing method has been around for sometime but I still get a lot of questions such as: “What now? I downloaded the torrent but nothing is happening.” I assume it’s because of the fact that downloading files via torrent is not as straightforward as downloading files directly from the server or from the web.
You can help those poor souls who are still unfamiliar with torrent by using Torrent2Exe. Using this service, users can download files with the torrent protocol without the need to install a torrent client.
How it works
Basically, what Torrent2Exe does is combine the “.torrent” file and a small torrent client into one single stand-alone EXE package. Users then can execute this EXE file and immediately start the downloading process.
It also means that anybody can just create an EXE file of a torrent, copy it onto a thumb drive (or send it via email to friends) and download it on another computer. There’s no need for a separate torrent client! Perfect for one-time torrent downloaders who don’t want to install additional software.
How to make the EXE file
- Enter the link to the torrent or select a torrent from your hard disk
- Choose whether you want a small or normal size EXE file, the difference is stated below
- Click “Start Download” to get the EXE
- Share the EXE or the link to download the EXE to with your torrent-illiterate friends
- Run the EXE to download the files
To draw you a picture, in my experiment on downloading Fedora (691MB), the small EXE is 96.3KB and the normal exe is 592KB - insignificant compared to the downloaded file.
Extra Functionalities and LimitationsTorrent2Exe goes one step further by providing users with extra functionality to share torrents, such as:
- Users can publish the EXE file on their sites or blog by just providing the visitors link to the EXE file. This link will appear after user adds the torrent files to the Torrent2Exe site.
- Users can also insert direct links to the downloads together with links to the torrent files. A special script is provided to help automate the process.
- First, the fact that the stand-alone has the “EXE” extension on it said that it can only be run in Windows computers.
- Second, even though you don’t need a torrent client to download the torrent-shared files, you still need a torrent-friendly connection. So if your admin block the lines, there’s nothing you can do (except try to bribe the person).
- Third, if you plan to share the EXE files via email, it’s recommended that you archive the EXE files into ZIP or RAR (or other compression formats) before doing the emailing. Some email services (such as GMail) don’t allow the distribution of EXE files. Plus, compressing the files will give you smaller size.

It is being reported that Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 7, will feature an “XP mode” that Mimics the look and feel of Windows XP. The feature will allow applications designed specifically for XP to run inside a virtual “box” in Windows 7. Appearance wise, it will simply look like the program is running on Windows XP, but behind-the-scenes there’s actually a lot going on.
There are plenty of applications that are not expected to run satisfactorily on Windows 7, so including a virtual XP feature is a pretty smart move on Microsoft’s part. That way, users will still have the capability of running their old XP only applications, inside the more flashy and feature-rich Windows 7. Best of all, it’s a free feature, so you certainly can’t beat the price.
The fact is Windows 7 takes advantage of what is coming to be known as “desktop virtualization.” This allows the operating system to mimic other operating systems (not just Windows XP) and run programs designed for other operating systems. So far, critics have been moderately impressed with the feature, though several have pointed out that it also has shortcomings.
For example in order to run the desktop virtualization feature, you need a PC that supports hardware virtualization. Even in PCs that already support hardware virtualization, often this is an extra feature located in the BIOS of the computer which must be switched on manually (virtually no home workstations or laptops are shipped with this feature active).
Besides a potential change in your computer BIOS, Microsoft also specifies a minimum of 2 GB of RAM to use the feature, along with at least 15 gigs of free hard drive for each “virtual box” you open. So on top of having to tinker around with the BIOS, you also need a fairly robust computer to take advantage of the desktop virtualization.
Some have compared Windows 7’s virtual desktop to Intel Mac’s ability to run Windows, but the experts say that when it comes to running other operating systems, Apple has a huge advantage over Windows 7. Namely, that the Mac “world” is a smaller and better connected group than the massive army of Windows users. This means that developers for Mac software also tend to be a small and tightly knit group, which is certainly advantageous when it comes to making sure an operating system will run any software designed for it.
Windows, on the other hand, is a bit of a free-for-all where development is concerned, and there is much less communication about what “the other guy” is doing when it comes to developing for Windows PCs. For this reason, the Windows 7 virtual desktop feature could potentially run into all sorts of “hiccups” trying to run different software designed for XP. If history is any judge, it will likely take several years to work out all the kinks.
Still, the inclusion of the virtual desktop feature shows that Windows is moving in the right direction, toward greater inclusion, and away from the exclusionary tactics the company has been accused of using in the past.
When running applications consume too high memory usage than they should be, your computer will encounter slowness or even become unresponsive. Instead of letting the computer to become unresponsive due to excessive memory consumption, have you ever thought that what kind of software utility that can help you to monitor the memory usage and alert you to take necessary action before your computer become unresponsive? Usage Monitor is a utility that is able to help you monitor on the memory usage consumed by applications and give you an alarm when it hits the maximum limit predefined by you.
Usage Monitor is a tiny utility that can monitor memory usage for any processes running in windows at background. Beside monitor on memory usage, it also allows you to monitor on GDI or user object. You can set a limit to any of processes that you would like to monitor. When the limit threshold is hit, it will alert you with few different ways, depend on how you configure the alarm type. For instance, you can choose to either display a small pop up at the taskbar, or display a message box, or flash the taskbar, or even execute a file.
Usage Monitor v1.9.0.1 is absolutely free to download and it only consume 1.16MB of your hard disk space. It is compatible to run on Windows 98/ME/2K/XP/2K3/Vista.

The team that is developing the Open Source version of the Google browser for Linux has finally released the alpha version of the Internet browser. The Chromium for Linux version was in pre-alpha stage for quite some time. Even the pre-alpha versions of the Chromium web browser were fairly stable but the alpha release marks a new milestone in the development.
The new version of the Google browser is still lacking several features of the Windows counterpart. Some of the most important features that are still missing are plugin support, printing, complex tab dragging, complex text and Google Gears support. The release notification contains a notice that additional parts of the web browser are incomplete and that users should keep this in mind before installation.
Interested users find information on how to add the Chromium builds to their Linux distribution at the official Ubuntu Chromium Daily Builds website. Let us know your opinion on the new version of the web browser if you are a Linux user and installing the Chromium build on your operating system.

Microsoft has just released the second service pack for the Windows Vista operating system which can either be downloaded as a standalone package or via Windows Update. The standalone package not only contains the Windows Vista Service Pack 2 but also the second service pack for Windows Server 2008, a combined package so to speak. The size of the 32-bit standalone package is about 302 Megabytes for the five language and 390 Megabytes for the seven language service pack and almost double that amount for the 64-bit standalone package which comes in sizes of 508 and 622 Megabytes.
The size of the Service Pack 2 is considerably smaller when downloaded over Windows Update with all downloads being less than 100 Megabytes in size for all possible editions. Microsoft has created a What’s New article at Technet which details the most notable changes that are introduced in Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
Changes that affect most users are the removal of the halp open outbound TCP connection limit, support for Bluetooth 2.1, improvements to Wi-Fi connections and configurations and the integration of Windows Search 4.0.

There are basically three types: Firefox add-ons that offer the video downloading functionality, Greasemonkey scripts that offer the functionality on specific video portals and programs that run on the operating system and integrate with the Internet browser.
NetVideoHunter (via Firefox Facts) is a Firefox add-on that works with multiple video portals including Youtube, Dailymotion and dozen others. The add-on is on the other hand not the typical video downloader that provides the download links either on the video portal itself or in one of the Firefox toolbars or status bar. It displays an icon in the status bar that displays a count of videos that have been found by the add-on.
This count stays even if the user leaves the website. A left-click on the number in the status bar opens a new window that displays all video names and urls plus two buttons to play or download the videos.
A click on Play will play the videos directly in the same window with the interesting option to change the size on the fly. There are also options to change the window to fullscreen mode and to smooth the video playback.
Google continues to roll out the Lab features for Gmail and hot on the heels of automatic language translations Google has now added Inbox Preview.
Going on the name alone you’d have a hard time figuring out exactly what the functionality was and why you would want to preview your inbox? But the feature is aimed at people who want to access their Gmail accounts through a slow connection. Gmail can take quite a while to load fully, but that might not be something you have noticed if you only ever access it through a speedy connection.
On a slow connection you could be sitting there for several minutes only to find out you didn’t have any new e-mails you wanted to read anyway. So Google have come up with a solution. While Gmail loads properly it will display a static image showing the ten most recent messages added to your Inbox. Based on that information you can decided whether to continue letting Gmail load or use the time elsewhere.
A very simple feature, but an effective one if you are relying on a slow connection. I tried enabling it while accessing Gmail through my fast home connection and you don’t even have time to look at the preview image. But it is something to keep turned on if you don’t know how good some connections you will be surfing with are.

Software piracy costs $50 billion a year, according to BSA
A report released Tuesday claims that 20 percent of PC software within the United States is pirated – and that that rate is still the lowest in the world.
The sixth revision of a joint study between the Business Software Alliance and IDC found that that Armenia, Bangladesh, Georgia, and Zimbabwe are the countries with the highest amounts of piracy, topping 90 percent. Worldwide, the rate of software piracy rose from 38 percent to 41 percent, because of the increase of Internet users in high-piracy locations such as China and India, the report found. Software piracy within the U.S., meanwhile, has remained flat. Setting the effects of exchange rates aside, the report found that the estimated losses from software piracy grew by 5 percent to $50.2 billion.
In 2005, however, The Economist published a critique of the BSA/IDC methodology, concluding that the study’s results were exaggerated. BSA and IDC representatives were not immediately available for comment.
The report comes against a backdrop of widespread crackdowns on sites that have used the BitTorrent protocol to disseminate software, movies, and music. Both Sweden’s The Pirate Bay and The Netherlands’ Mininova are facing down prosecutors intent on shutting both sites down; the operators of The Pirate Bay were found guilty of infringement, but said they would appeal.
In 2008, the rate of PC software piracy dropped in 57 countries, remained the same in 36, and rose in the remaining 17, the study found. Lowering global piracy by just one point a year would add $20 billion in stimulus to the IT industry, the BSA claims.
“We are continuing to make progress against PC software piracy in many countries, which helps people working in the US-led global software industry. That’s the good news,” said BSA president and chief executive Robert Holleyman, in a statement.
“The bad news is that PC software piracy remains so prevalent in the United States and all over the world,” Holleyman said. “It undermines local IT service firms, gives illegal software users an unfair advantage in business, and spreads security risks. We should not and cannot tolerate a $9 billion hit on the software industry at a time of economic stress.”
The regions of the world with the least piracy include both North America and the European Union; the countries with the lowest piracy as measured by the study include the United States, Japan, New Zealand, and Luxembourg, all near 20 percent.
Gmail’s pretty popular, but even Gmail users can fall prey to email overload. An important work-related message could end up lost in a sea of spam and bacn. Today, I’ll show you how to use ReBoxed to bring more important messages bubbling up to the surface of your inbox.
After creating your ReBoxed user account, you’ll be directed to your Google Account to allow ReBoxed access to your Gmail inbox and contact information. You don’t have to provide your password but this does permit ReBoxed to peek into your inbox automatically whenever you use their service.
After ReBoxed collects the list of your contacts, it will as you to vote for them according to importance, which is just a nice way of asking you to prioritize your contacts. You’ll be presented with two choices from which you must select whose messages are more important. You may also mark a contact as a VIP or mark that address as belonging to an automated service.![]()
![]()
After you’re done voting, you’ll arrive at your inbox view. ReBoxed seems to only display unread messages from GMail. Messages from VIPs will be displayed at the very top, followed by messages from ranked senders and finally, bulk mailers.
For example, while a message from PayPal is important (and thus highlighted), it’s still a “robot” sending the message, and is not as important as messages from my colleagues and editors. Messages from my family would rank at the very top, having marked them as VIPs, above my colleagues. You have the option of voting a few more times in order to train the filters.
Clicking the messages will open that them in Gmail, where you can reply, delete etc. ReBoxed is an easy tool to help get your important matters read and out of the way at the beginning of your day.

Downloading files, photos, games and movies from Internet is quite common nowadays and some files downloaded could be redundant without your notice, such as files with different file name but with same content, files with the same file name but different content due to multiple versions being downloaded but only the latest version is needed. Redundant files could be the one which lead to your hard disk space getting full without being fully utilized. To find out and clean up those redundant files are not easy and could be very time consuming. With CloneSpy, it can help you to identify those redundant files with your preference searching criteria so that you can free up some disk space to be used for other more important data storage.
CloneSpy is a tiny utility that able to help you to free up hard disk space by detecting and removing duplicate files. There are few searching criteria that allows you to find the duplicate files depending on your situation, such as to search for duplicate files contents regardless of the file name, files with duplicate contents and same file name, files with same file name but with different contents, or files with same file name and with almost the same file size. You can search duplicate files either from the particular path or from 2 paths together. Another great feature which is worth to highlight here is, it allows you to create checksum files (which contain a list of files that you would like to search for any duplication) so that you can use it later to compare with any folders either in removable media storage or local hard disk and find out the redundant files. Once the duplication files are detected, you can choose to either delete redundant files automatically or to pop up a window to inform you which files are duplicate or generate a report in text file so that you can view it later.
CloneSpy v2.4 is absolutely free to download. It is compatible to run on Windows 98se, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

The development team of the Opera Internet browser introduced speed dial a while ago in the web browser. Speed Dial displays up to nine websites that are added by the user as thumbnails whenever a new blank tab is opened in the web browser. This gives the user another possibility of visiting popular websites without having to access the bookmarks or typing in the domain names or keyword shortcuts directly into the Internet browser.
Speed Dial is displaying nine website thumbnails in a 3×3 matrix. Some users of the Opera Internet browser might want to change the speed dial size to display additional (or less) website thumbnails. This can be done by editing the speeddial.ini configuration file that is found in the Opera profile folder. Windows users find the file in the Application Data folder.
All that needs to be done to change the speed dial size is to open the speeddial.ini file and add the following three lines to the end of the file.
[Size]
Rows=x
Columns=y
where x and y are the number of rows and columns that should be displayed.
4×4
8×8
Some sizes are obviously to large to offer the benefit that Speed Dial is supposed to offer to the Internet user. It might however still be interesting for some users who want to increase the speed dial size slightly.

PowerPack 2009 is a very sophisticated Windows operating system tweaker and information tool that offers that many options that it might intimidate inexperienced users. The interface divides the various options of the software program in so called modules. Available modules range from Windows operating system tweaks to a startup manager, track cleaner, disk usage analyzer and system information.
Individual modules can either contain one function, for example cleaning the Windows Registry, or multiple pages like the Windows Secrets module which lists 11 functions that load in their separate windows each.
The tool combines many commonly used system maintenance tools in its interface which makes it an interesting option for users who like to control their computer system from one software program instead of multiple applications. Below is a small overview of the available modules and their core features:
- Disk Cleaner: Scan drives for temporary files and delete those files. Includes the option to add file types and to exclude directories from the process.
